WNY Fly Fishing Review - SharkWave Ultimate Trout 3WT

I have been using the new SharkWave Ultimate Trout for about a month now and can tell you it is one of the finest fly lines I have fished with, the rod of choice for the test is my Sage ESN 10' 3WT. The line sings through the guides and throws anything I have asked it to do, indy's with shot, dbl flies to streamers and of course dries with a very delicate presentation and pin point accuracy. The line floats very high in the water, mends with little or no effort at all, tracks the air perfectly.

WNY Fly Fishing Stream Report 5/30/2015

Tom, Jeff and myself went out inland in the am to beat the lousy heat we are getting now. The fishing stared out strong then as the fire ball in the sky came out everything went into hiding. We caught fish on my peacock emerger, BWO's and micro caddis. I lost a very large rainbow on the caddis pupa and landed a 24" sucker go figure, this rain will help out, but just remember to give our cold water buddies a break and work on the warm water ones.

WNY Fly Fishing - Trout Camp - Stream Report 5/23/2015

Tom and I went out this week for some much needed inland action, the weather was perfect and the water couldn't have been better. The bugs coming off was boarding on stupid, caddis in tan and black, olives, march browns, brown drakes. The trout were bug drunk and willing to take the flies with little or no regard for safety, most of the fish I took were on usual's, BWO's and my peacock emerger. Phil had a very good day learning about fly fishing, landing his very first trout on the dry and losing some very nice ones as well.

WNY Fly Fishing - Trout Camp 5/17/2015

We had another great Trout Camp this weekend with Paul and his brother Steve. The weathers was perfect and the fish were more than willing to come out and play. The WNY Guide was Jessie Hollenbeck from Wide Sky Fly Fishing, the hatches started out strong and never really stalled all day. The olives came out and stayed all day, caddis, yellow, black and brown stones, march browns were all on the menu. Steve started the day off strong hooking and landing a mixture of rainbows and browns catching fish on just about anything he tied on, his brother Paul did just as well. The biggest fish came at the end of the day for Steve, when he took a beautiful 15" fish on a dry, his personal best. Jessie did a great job teaching the guys and we covered a lot of water, so much in fact that Steve's boots completely fell apart(it reminded me of Evil Phil's forced march's along the creeks).

The cooler temps will help out this week for our finned friends, look for BWO's, caddis and march browns to come off early and late in the day.

Hi Mr. Guida:

We surveyed the Veteran’s section of Spring Creek in late November 2014 in response to merganser predation during the cold winter of 2013-2014.  Preliminary results of last fall’s survey was compared to results of the last time we surveyed the Veteran’s section in 2001 and Oatka Creek Park in 2003.  While abundance may be lower, it appears that the numbers and percentages of the size/age groups are similar, although it did seem like the number/percentage of yearlings should have been higher.  Given this data, the trout population in Spring Creek should recover fairly quickly.

We are aware that the mergansers returned during the equally cold winter of 2014-2015 and will survey veteran’s section again in 2015.  At this point, I still think that Spring Creek is a very productive stream and the wild brown trout should recover on its own.

If this year’s survey data suggests further impacts to the brown trout population, we will consider implementing one or more of a number of management options available, if warranted.

I hope I have answered your inquiry.  Thanks for your interest in New York’s fishery resources.
