WNY Fly Fishing Report 03/31/10

I went out today to do some fishing with my wife before the hoards of garbage throwers invade the streams for the trout opener. I was disappointed with the lack of fish in the streams, as most of them I fear have been taken out already by the locals before the legal harvest season. Why do people feel the need to rape the streams for a sardine sized fillet and keep going back for more? If more people would practice catch & release there would be more fish for everyone to enjoy throughout the season. We all pay for a fishing license, and it does not give you the right to over harvest the resource no matter what. Fishing should not be easy or hard, but it should be an enjoyable time for all who choose to take the time and effort to clean up the water ways, pick up the garbage along the banks from the slobs, and ask for permission from the landowners. Do you remember the first time out with your dad or uncle? The excitement of getting ready, the l o n g drive to the stream at dark, walking to his secret spot and waiting for it to get light enough to fish. Then making your first cast and watching your line suddenly go straight and hearing them say set the hook!! Having everyone around you telling you on how to fight the fish, feeling the rush as the fish slowly comes to net and everyone cheers. Just think of that every time you take more than your limit, and how you deprive others from getting that memory.

  1. I am glad it wasn't just me. I took a half day for the same reason, only to be skunked. In the five hours I was out, I ran into seven other fishermen, who each reported the same thing: nothing. Before I left I saw one guy take one in, and was happy to watch how careful he was when he released it. Time to go inland.

  2. i think they were just waiting for the bait chuckers. that whole was loaded with fish today. did decide to throw some flies for a little bit and pulled one 2 yr old on a flashback prince. me and my buddy's put a lot of the 2yr olds and a few 3yr olds back hoping they'd be able to make the wknd.

  3. You said it perfect! Its also a shame to see a tree has clogged that hole now.

  4. Just got back from a full day on the water. Two very popular spots. I was joined by two friends, each of whom have fished everywhere from Alaska to Florida. The result: 1 sucker and a snagged Steelie. Water color was great at both spots, too. Just can't figure it out.

  5. i for one like the tree being there. besides the one stick that messes the run up. hoping a local will go swimming this summer and take care of that.
