Bob & Gary’s “Water on the Water” Experience

Although the Cattaraugus Creek wasn’t cooperative for several planned events, the one outing we did manage was outstanding. Ten members showed up, learned new skills, and enjoyed a day of fishing and camaraderie. Thank you, Gary, for all the excellent education on the water. That’s what this club is about—building membership, building relationships, and learning together.

🎯 Casting Clinics

Our casting clinics drew an amazing turnout—over 14 people at the first session! We didn’t have enough volunteers to teach everyone, but the instruction was still exceptional.

Mark’s clinic received some of the best compliments we’ve heard:

Tick Awareness: Permethrin vs. Picaridin

• Permethrin
• Used on clothing/gear only
• Extremely effective against ticks
• Lasts 4–6 weeks on fabric
• Do not apply directly to skin
• Picaridin

• Great for mosquitoes & biting flies
• Mildly effective for ticks

Best practice: Treat clothing with permethrin + apply picaridin to exposed skin.

🌿 Hogweed vs. Queen Anne’s Lace

Giant Hogweed (Dangerous)

• Height: 8–14 feet
• Flowers: Large umbrella clusters up to 2.5 feet wide
• Sap causes severe burns, blistering, and long‑term photosensitivity

If exposed:

1. Wash immediately with cold water and soap
2. Keep the area out of sunlight for 48 hours
3. Seek medical attention if blistering occurs

Queen Anne’s Lace (Safe)

• Height: 1–4 feet
• Flowers: Small, delicate white clusters
• Often has a single purple dot in the center

 The weather looks very good for the end of the week and with cooler temps and more water the fish should be in good shape and the bugs very happy

WNY Fly Fishing - Last Casting Class of the year

 Well the last casting clinic of the year has come and gone with a bang. We had a very good bunch from 9yrs old to 60 plus of men and women, a very good time was had by all. A big thanks to Mark Thill for bringing everything and setting up the target cones and the hoops and the rods and reels from the club for everyone to use and to all the members who came to help out. I am looking forward to next year and getting more people into the sport.

 The casting class was fantastic we had quite a few people come out and more ladies than guys, the class was overall a big hit with the ladies, and they said what a great time it was meeting everyone and learning new techniques. I encourage everyone who knows someone who wants to start fly fishing to sign up and come out to learn about this great sport

 fished the last 4 days and the fishing was slow until the weather straightened out and the water cleared up a little, we caught fish on jusrt about everything from double nymphs to buggers and dries which was very challenging due to the fish were taking emergers and not the adults so identifying what they were taking was i guess as multiply bugs were coming off

 well the fishing was ok this weekend, the cold shut down most of the bugs and the wind was brutal. more rain coming for the weekend so choose wisely on where to go and the day

WNY Fly Fishing Stream Report 5/23/2026

 Well we got out wed thru friday and absolutely killed it!!!!! Jon and myself both got krakens along with 30 fish days each. we used olive buggers and a dbl nymph rig with a combo of hares ears, pheasant tail soft hackles with tungsten beads that did the most damage and some stone flies. the fishing was best in the morning and went down hill as the day went on, the hatches were sporadic with a hodge podge of bugs coming off not in great numbers, but the fish were taking the emergers.

 well, the weather is gotten better and so has the fishing, everything i drove over this weekend looked great. I took out my nephew and his best buddy for some fly fishing. the stream was a little high still, but the fish were hungry they both got trout on nymphs as well as buggers. there was some on top action, but it was very sporadic.

 Everything down south is high and dirty as of yesterday with more rain coming, the smaller ones should be ready for the weekend, the bigger ones may not be. I fished PA wed and had a ball catching my first palomino trout

 More rain again for this week making fishing tough on all but the smallest creeks/rivers which makes finding them tough but it will get better. Make sure you check all the gauges before making the drive and wasting time/gas

 Well, the insanity continues of the streams as the arcade trout derby was this weekend and Wellsville next weekend makings the streams packed with madness, the derby's bring out the worst in people and punish the resource and piss off the landowners. In Wellsville yesterday i saw crazy people in the water at over700cfs over their waist and one guy went deeper than that. You put your life in danger as well as everyone around you if you slip and go under. The rains have come again and a lot of them have gone way up and dirty rant over this week coming up should be nice to go out and stretch the legs
