WNY Fly Fishing Product Review - Fishpond - Nomad Mid-Length Boat Net

I bought this net early this year for lake run steelhead and browns and summer bass. The nets are just about unbreakable, impervious to sun or water, are both strong and light and float like a cork if dropped in the river. Along with the attractive woven carbon fiber frame, all of Nomad’s new nets use a deep, clear rubber bag that is easy on the fish, doesn’t freeze up during winter fly fishing sessions and prevents hooks from getting snagged and tangled. I was very impressed with the feel/balance of the net and how light it is when you have to hike around with it.

WNY Fly Fishing Stream Report - Sage Response 7100-4 Review

Sage Response 7100-4

  • Good line-speed/power for performance in windy conditions
  • Progressive taper helps with presentation
  • Truly a “Jack of all Trades” rod

  • FULL REVIEW
The Sage Response seems tailor made for the angler wanting to throw a variety of flies in a wide range of conditions. I caught skittish Steelhead/Salmon in crystal clear pools along Cattaraugus Creek yet also pushed line through the heavy cross winds common in our area.
    Casting Distance and Accuracy
While not the top in either category , the Sage Response 7100-4 was in the top three in both categories, earning top marks as a true “All Purpose” rod. The Response offers enough power to throw plenty of line onto big waters like the Catt and even the Salmon river.
    General fit, finish and feel
This American-made rod (made by hand at Sage’s factory on Bainbridge Island, Washington) looks like a slick piece of art. The soft mahogany-red finish of the rod pops against the green and blue waters of wild rivers. The cork grip proved a bit fuller than most of the others in the test and some of the smaller testers though it just a tad too large, but not unmanageable.
    Versatility
Whether you need to reach across a river to swing a streamer through a feeding channel or use a heavy indy rig , the Response meets the need. I found even novice anglers were casting 50 feet with little effort, while experienced casters were making that distance and then some.
I really enjoy this rod and you will too

    THE VERDICT
When you want a do-it-all rod, compromises have to be made, and the Response makes reasonable compromises to be a true “quiver of one.” By coupling proven rod blank tapers with existing top quality carbon fiber, Sage created a rod with good casting power and good sensitivity for smooth, soft presentation of dry flies of all sizes. When you need a “do-it-all” rod rather than a quiver of specialty rods, the Response fills the bill as well as any in the class, though it costs a bit more than some with similar characteristics.

WNY Fly Fishing Stream Report 10/21/2013

We went to the smaller Erie tribs today and found the water to be stained and full of leaves. The fishing was very good and the crowds had all but disappeared by 11 o'clock. We caught a mixed bag with browns and fresh steelhead, all of the fish were taken on egg patterns. The creek cleared up as the day worn on and the fishing got better.

WNY Fly Fishing Stream Report 12/23/2012

I headed south with Brian and his son Adam to do some steelhead fishing, the weather was cold and the water perfect!!!! The fishing was off the charts for this time of the year with over a dozen steelhead hooked between us. The fly of the day for me was a cheese colored Hairball, the fish fought very hard despite the cold water temps.

WNY Fly Fishing Stream Report 11/12/2012

Jeff and I hit the catt today, despite the crazy high winds. We started in the middle of the rez and found good numbers of fish rolling, jumping and moving about. I managed two chrome silver steelhead, swinging a White Lighting streamer tied Clouser style. The viz was a little clouded with about 18" viz, nice flows and temps.

WNY Fly Fishing Stream Report 9/29/12

The fishing today was very good for this time of the season, we went to the Catt and swung streamers with great success. The fly of choice was my White Lighting, swung slow and stripped every now and then. The Steelhead were a mixture of jacks and very large fish, they hit like a runaway freight train taking over 50 yds of line out and jumping completely out of the water several times. My Ross Reel F1, Rocks The House!!! I love this reel. You will be able to get this reel at Colvilles Tackle shop in the next couple of weeks, if you are looking for a new fly reel this is the one to get.

WNY Fly Fishing Stream Report 2/26/2012

The smaller creeks are fishable and holding good numbers of fish, I got out very late today and only farted around for two hrs. The steelhead were caught on pink crystal meth under an indy.

WNY Fly Fishing Stream Report 2/11/2012

WNY Fly Fishing Stream Report 12/18/2011

Luke and I went out to Oak Orchard to froth the water, the air temps hovered around 10 degrees this morning making it freaking cold!!!!!!!!. the fishing was slow and the water was stained, it wasn't until afternoon when a few fish were picked up one by myself. I was sitting on the bank when I saw a fish porpoise, I got up made a roll cast using my sage z-axis switch rod and swung the fly toward the fish gave it one strip and bam!!! steelhead on. A tough day out on the water, but I was with a good friend and that's what its about, the fish is a bonus.

WNY Fly Fishing Stream Report 10/8/2011

YEE_HAA!!!!! I have been out for three days in row now and loving life. Luke and I went to the Catt to poke around and search for some willing steelhead, what we found was the fish are spread out and willing to take on the swing as well as nymphing. Luke got his first steelhead on the swing!!!! Congrats Luke glad to be with you.

    WNY Fly Fishing Report 3/13/11

We went out today to hit Steelhead on the Erie tribs and to check things out. The water was off colored and cold with about 10" of viz, Luke hooked up very quickly and lost the fish as it went nuts!!!!!!! the rest of the day was very slow until I got this hog at the end of the day on Black Thunder.

    WNY Fly Fishing Report 03/21/10

I went inland to start the day and ended up fishing for steelhead close to home. The inland fishing was a fun change from chasing steelhead, and you could say i was dialed in for both. The inland trout browns and bows were caught on spring creek specials and the big boys fell to White lighting and my Emerald Shiner. (sorry the pics stink but i was alone)
